Music Groups

“Shout for joy to the Lord, all the earth, burst into jubilant song with music;”

– Psalm 98:4

The Music Ministry at Oakland Presbyterian Church is designed to build and sustain diversity, creativity, and joy in the endeavor to glorify God. Anyone who enjoys singing music or playing an instrument is welcome to join us. On occasion, these groups perform at outside services, concerts, or special meetings.

Sanctuary Choir

For those aged 18 and over, the Sanctuary Choir enjoys singing a wide range of church music styles from sixteenth century Renaissance to folk tunes and spirituals to contemporary compositions. They provide inspiring music during the 11:00 am worship service on Sunday mornings. Rehearsals are Wednesday evenings at 7:30 pm in the choir room. The Sanctuary Choir is open to all those who love to sing; no prior experience is necessary.

Praise Team

The Praise Team sings every Sunday at the 8:45 am worship service, and is open to those who are 14 years or older. The Praise Team includes vocalists, guitar, drums, and keyboard. Rehearsals are held on Sunday mornings at 7:45 am in the Sanctuary.

Children’s Choir and Music Camp

Our Wednesday evening music program is for children ages 3 through 5th grade. The Children’s Choir meets at 5:30 pm in our Christian Life Center, where for just $2 they receive a delicious and nutritious meal. At 6:00 pm, the children are divided into three groups based on age and taken to various classes that include vocal choir, Bible study, instruments, and recreation. The children participate in worship several times throughout the year and have the opportunity to attend a choir festival every spring. Children’s Choir is free for church members, and just $10 for non-members. The program follows the Orange County Public School calendar. Registration opens in late summer, but children are welcome to sign up at any time during the school year.

Music Camp is offered for one week every summer from 8:00 am until 5:00 pm. Camp is available for children who have completed Kindergarten through 5th grade. Cost is $125 per child. Participants experience various musical activities such as hand bells, vocal music, musical games, hand chimes, Orff mallets, recorders, outdoor recreation, and game room time. A musical is presented on the last day of camp. Registration for camp opens in the spring of each year. For information regarding this year’s camp, please contact the church office at 407-656-4452.

Jubilation Ringers (hand bells)

The hand bell choir plays occasionally during the 11:00 am worship service and at special services throughout the year. Rehearsals are held Tuesday evenings at 5:15 pm in the Sanctuary. No experience is required to join the hand bell choir, but some experience with musicality or music study is helpful.

String Ensemble

The string ensemble occasionally plays music before and during the 11:00 worship service. The ensemble currently consists of piano, violins, viola, and cello. Rehearsal times vary depending on the number of participants and the scheduled performances. For information, please contact the church office at 407-656-4452.

Young Christian Musicians

The YCM Band program provides an opportunity for homeschooled students to discover the value of playing an instrument, to develop musical skills, and to experience the joy of performing in a Christian atmosphere. The classes, taught by Amy Duncan, are open to children ages 9 through young adult. Rehearsals are held on Wednesday afternoons in the Sanctuary. The YCM program is a ministry – there are no charges for instruction. Parents are responsible for providing their child’s instrument, either through rental or purchase. There is an annual fee of $55 for music to cover the cost of books and music used throughout the year. Payment plans are available. For details or to ask questions regarding registration, requirements, or rehearsal schedules, please contact Amy via email at ycmband@gmail.com.
