A Little History
Early in the 1970’s, the building expansion included a library for the church. It was designed with shelving along one wall, surrounding a chalkboard that could be used at meetings and classes that were held in the room. Many of the books were donated by church families, and reference materials were purchased by the church. Over the years, various church members kept the media organized, although there was no effective method established to keep track of the books.
At the turn of the century, the Christian Education committee took on the job of cleaning up and organizing the room as well as the materials present at that time. In partnership with a couple of nearby churches, new shelving was built, along with a check-out desk, and display window. New library furniture was purchased to provided areas for reading, research, and children’s story time. A computer was obtained, to be used with the newly purchased library software. Then began the process of establishing a modern card catalog system using the Library of Congress, and computer systems that allowed items to be tracked with barcodes.
Our current library has a variety of media, including Biblical research, devotionals, parenting, self-help, novels – Christian, secular and classical, children’s books for all age groups, music, and videos. Although we have limited space, we offer almost 7000 items for checkout, and provide an inviting space for all ages to enjoy a good book. We are constantly adding materials, through purchase and donation, and we participate with several churches of various denominations in “passing along” excess materials.
The library is frequented by members, guests, and even our preschool classes. We are very proud to be the only local preschool that includes a “library day” each week where we can teach the little ones about the joys of reading, share special stories with them, train them in the care of books, and help them understand the system of borrowing books as they actually check out books to take home each week.
Where We Are Now
We hope you have taken the opportunity to browse our shelves, but if you haven’t then you are missing out on a great selection of books, reference materials, music, movies and more. We are always working to expand our book collection and we have a “wish list” for those of you who would like to request specific titles to be included in our library. We have these titles available for “adoption” by members of the congregation, for them to purchase as a gift to the library commemorating an occasion such as a birthday or anniversary, or to give in memory or in honor of an individual. If you would like more information about how you can honor a loved one or if you would like to request a book that you believe would be a worthy addition to the library, please contact Yvonne O’Doniel-Davis at the church library.
